Stalking a guru takes time and persistence. If you’re not committed to the cause, you’re likely to lose interest or get too busy doing other things to keep at it long enough to succeed. I’ve noticed my own activity level ebbing and flowing because of the constant pull of other concerns. But fortunately, I’m anchored firmly enough to my goal to keep coming back to it.

I’ve noticed a few similarities between guru stalking and the movies.

One is “the countdown clock”. Movies build dramatic tension by setting a clear time limit before which the hero must solve some problem to avoid catastrophe. The obvious example is the countdown timer on a bomb. Have you ever noticed that movie villains always set their bombs to explode just before the end of the movie? Funny thing.

In guru stalking, having an event whose timing is outside your control can provide powerful motivation.

For me, the unmovable date of Russell Brunson’s 12 Month internet Millionaire Workshop in February has helped. If I slack off and don’t at least make my name familiar to Russell before then, the odds of standing out from the crowd at the workshop will be severely diminished, and I will have wasted a lot of time and money.

The other analogy to the movies that I thought of comes from, I believe, “Method Acting”. To make their performance more convincing and real, rather than simply doing and saying the things that are written in the script, the actor attempts discover and experience the feelings of the character. The classic (and oft lampooned) question is “what’s my motivation”?

As a guru stalker, what’s your motivation? How clearly and specifically is it defined? If you don’t have anything more in mind than “I want to network with the gurus”, not only might you end up with nothing to say if you ever meet a guru, but you might not have the necessary motivation, and might not do the particular things necessary to get you that far.

I must confess, I’m not 100% sure what I’d do if I were to establish contact with Russell Brunson, but I do have a few of ideas in mind. For one, I’d like to listen to whatever he might want to say — anything I could learn from “the master” would be great. For another, I’d like to discuss how I could promote his products more successfully as his affiliate (I’ve got one particular idea that I won’t go into here).

I don’t know whether my business or my products are entirely ready for any sort of joint venture or promotion by Russell, but if not, I’d certainly be interested in any suggestions he’d have regarding what it would take to get to that point. And in the mean time, I’m working on improving my business products and processes to make it more likely that I will be ready.

Before I finish, I should say one more thing: don’t forget that when you make first contact, you don’t necessarily want to launch into your “sales pitch”. I’ve read where a number of gurus have said that they want to get to know people a little first before they decide whether to have anything to do with them on a business level. And I’ve heard it recommended that you let the guru let you know when they’re ready to hear what you’ve got in mind.
